In the region are produced more than 10 types of honey varying in color, smell and flavor. Adjara is also one of the few areas in the world that has preserved the tradition of wild beekeeping. Itinerary
Batumi – Kviakhidzeebi - Batumi
Departure to the high mountains of Adjara. After 1.5 hours we reach ancient village Kviakhidzeebi. We visit a farm that practises the jara beekeeping method.
Jara is a hollowed wooden log used since ancient times for domesticating bees. Swarms of wild bees are collected in the wild forests and settled in jaras. To protect honey from brown bears the wooden logs are placed on the top of trees and cliffs.
The farm produces pumpkins, beans, cucumbers, corn, nuts and fruits. In the beekeeping garden we take a closer look at the jara beekeeping, the characteristics of the Caucasian honeybee, the honey plants in the mountainous Adjara and the different bee products, like honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly and wax.
We dress up a beekeeper suite and explore the inside of jaras and modern beehives.
Finally, we learn to taste honey with all our senses.
At noon, we take a picnic with a beautiful mountain view. Delicious homegrown vegetables and homemade cheese and bread are served.
In the afternoon, visit to a wood workshop, where the bee farmer demonstrates how to make jaras from different tree species.
Then he accompanies us in the deep forest and shows us hidden jaras in treetops and at the top of 60 m high cliffs.
In the evening, we have a dinner from Adjarian Grandma’s kitchen. The menu includes: Malakhto, young kidney beans in a spiced walnut sauce; Tolma, a spiced mix of rice tomatoes and minced beef, rolled in pkhali leaves; Tapliani Sinori, an unleavened lavash flatbread with melted honey, hazel and dry fruits; Taplakveri, honey bread with wheat flour, honey, vanilla and yogurt dessert; Hasuta, in butter roasted corn flour mixed with honey; homemade white wine Tsolokauri; honey schnapps;
Around 9 pm we'll be back to Batumi.
